Before you purchase a horse from us, please take the time to read our sales and return policy. After all, purchasing a horse is a major decision.

Does LXY Stables accept payments on horses?

We do not accept payments for horses, the purchase price is due in full and the horse is marked "sold". For those needing time to consult with a trainer, spouse or tranportation company We do offer a $25 non-refundable holding fee, good for seven (7) days. This means the horse is marked "sold". By the seventh day payment is due in full or the horse is put back on the market.

Can I still buy the horse after the seven (7) days if it is put back on the market?
Yes. You might be competing for time with another prospective buyer, but the horse is available unless marked "sold".

Does the holding fee go toward the purchase of the horse?
The holding fee is optional and is separate from the purchase price. This fee is for us to use to relist the horse, should the prospective buyer not be able to complete the purchase.

LXY Stables accepts the following types of payment:

We accept cash in person or paypal. Paypal will allow you to use your current bank account or credit card. Sorry, but we do not accept checks or money orders of any kind. This includes cashiers checks and/or personal checks.

Who takes care of the Health Certificate and Coggins?

We will arrange the appointment with a veterinarian in our area for a Health Certificate and Coggins once the horse is paid for in full. This may take a few days to be ready and are good for 30 days. The cost to the buyer is $75 for a Health Certificate and Coggins. This amount covers both tests along with pays for our gas and time. We guarantee the horse passes both the health certificate and the coggins or the purchase amount of the horse and the $75 for the tests are refunded IN FULL and we keep the horse. We have sold many horse out of state and are familiar with Health Certificates, Coggins tests and Brand Inspections. If you have any questions about any of these services please contact us.

I've heard some horses require a Brand Inspection to cross state lines. Will I need one?

Brand Inspections are required for certain states when a horse is crossing state line. If your horse is heading east or south and will be crossing the Mississippi river, you will probably need a Brand Inspection. If your horse is being used for certain events in the midwest region you might also need a brand inspection. Your horse hauler would know for sure. Usually brand inspections can be done at the same time as the Health Certificate and Coggins and since a brand inspection is only a few dollars, LXY Stables does not charge the buyer for this service, unless there is a problem and further examination of the horse needs to be done. If this happens we will contact you to consult.

How do I arrange transportation?

LXY Stables does not deliver horses. We recommend UShip.com to find a professional horse transporter, quotes are free. Your "request" is bidded on from several professional horse haulers and you are able to choose one that suits you. We can help you find a horse hauler, however, we have no further involvement with the transportation details. It is up to the buyer to arrange transportation payment and scheduling.

What does it cost to keep the horse there until I can arrange transportation?

We offer a seven (7) day grace period, no charge to you the buyer. If you require more than seven (7) days, daily boarding arrangements can be made. If your are transporting out of state and are looking at more than two (2) weeks out for transportation, we offer a low monthly board fee. Horses remaining at facility for fifteen (15) days or longer will be charged the monthly board fee, no exception. Horses need to be removed no later than 30 days from the date of purchase, no exceptions. While horses are under our care awaiting transportation they will receive routine daily care.

Buy a horse from us and...

LXY Stables offers a 7 day grace period (no charge to new buyer) to make transportation arrangements
LXY Stables will pay for the brand inspection
If the horse does not pass the health certificate and/or coggins we keep the horse and refund the purchase amount
Should the horse die before leaving for it's new home, LXY Stables will assume responsibility and refund the purchase amount*

*Refunds are for the amount of purchase only and do not include any vet exams, testing or other charges incurred while at the facility.

Does LXY Stables have a return policy on horses?

LXY Stables takes pride in being completely honest and up front with all prospective buyers when selling a horse. We try to provide as many photos and videos as possible to showcase the horse, so you the buyer know as much about the horse as possible before you purchase.

We do still encourage buyers to come see in person any horse you are considering buying. However, since we do also sell out of state this is not always possible. If you have any doubts at all regarding a horse before purchasing we encourage you to ask us about a having a veterinary examination.

In the event the horse being purchased is not examined by a veterinarian prior to purchase, the BUYER assumes the risk of purchase and by signing the bill of sale acknowledges such waiver.

A pre-purchase veterinary exam can be done two different ways:
1. You the prospective buyer pay us the full asking price for the horse and then you take the horse to a veterinarian of your choice. LXY Stables will hold the amount of purchase as collateral until the exam is concluded. LXY Stables tries to disclose everything we know about the horse we are selling, however, horses are living animals and it is possible for them to injure themselves or develop conditions that may take awhile to become apparent. In this instance if you find something about the horse that changes your mind about purchasing it, LXY Stables will return the full asking amount of the horse. LXY Stables will not refund the amount of the veterinarian exam.

Please note if LXY Stables has not heard back from the prospective buyer by the end of the same business day that the appointment was scheduled we will consider the sale final and the amount of purchase will be kept. If for some reason your appointment is pending test results or needs to be rescheduled it is up to you the prospective buyer to notify us of this information as soon as possible to avoid miscommunication.

2. If you are considering purchase from out of state and cannot take the horse to the vet yourself you can arrange for us to take the horse to a local veterinarian for you. LXY Stables offers a $25 non-refundable holding fee, good for seven (7) days. This means the horse is marked "sold" for seven (7) days in consideration of your veterinarian examination.

Select a local veterinarian in our area (you can contact us for a list of available equine vets, or you can google search "Spearfish, South Dakota equine vet" for a list of vets in the surrounding area).
Next, contact us to arrange a day and time for the appointment with the vet of your choice.
Once the appointment is scheduled LXY Stables will transport the horse to the veterinarian for the exam and make sure the veterinarian has your contact information for all results. It is up to you the prospective buyer to provide a current working phone number and/or fax machine for receiving your results.
Finally, the prospective buyer must notify LXY Stables within the seven (7) day holding period with purchase decision or the horse will be placed back on the market for sale.

Prospective out of state buyers are responsible for all charges regarding veterinarian examination along with an additional $40 for gas and time spent driving the horse to the veterinarian.
Prosective buyers are responsible for:

$25 seven (7) day non-refundable holding fee
All charges regarding veterinarian examination including office visit and any tests performed
$40 for gas and time spent at the veterinarian

There are times when LXY Stables will sell a horse that was previously owned by someone else and the horse appears to be healthy so is not seen by a veterinarian until the day of the health certificate/coggins. LXY Stables will always disclose any and all information we have been given regarding the horse for sale along with our own personal assessments to a prospective buyer. If you find out something about the horse that changes your mind about purchasing, LXY Stables will return the amount of purchase in full prior to the horse leaving for it's new home. LXY Stables will not refund the amount of the veterinarian exam, the $40 for gas or the $25 seven (7) day non-refundable holding fee.

When would LXY Stables accept a return on a horse?

If LXY Stables has offered a "buy back" option for the horse at the time of purchase we will honor that option and re-purchase the horse at a later date for the previously agreed upon amount. If the horse just isn't working out as you had hoped you can contact us for further advice, sometimes we can suggest trying something you have not already tried.

If you are unable to keep the horse due to financial obligations or something un-related to the horse itself you are welcome to contact us in helping you sell the horse. We will help you by listing the horse for free on the internet, as well as our website and by telling everyone we know about the horse needing a new living situtation. Your personal matters will remain private while our main focus is on getting the horse into a new living situation.

Each LXY Stables horse is sold with the following unless otherwise noted prior to purchase:
a bill of sale
signed registration papers (if registered)
current vaccinations
current worming
recent trimming
